Special Seminar Event At Society of Illustrators- Sept. 25th

A Gallery Talk with

Tomer Hanuka, Yuko Shimizu and Sam Weber

	September 25, 2010  4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
	Three illustrators from vastly different backgrounds; Canada, Japan and Israel; a meeting at the crossroads of a distinct American esthetic to examine their new found artistic voices through personal mythologies, broken narratives and remixed identities.  An open window into the visual melting pot of contemporary image making.  Spend an afternoon with these artists as they discuss their work and techniques in an informal setting. Required Lecture for MICA Illustration Majors

The Walters and Museum is hosting a special event for our department on September 17. All our majors are required to attend. This is a great opportunity to link with this great institution and a chance for us to show our support. The exhibit will free for our students and they can go and visit as often as they wish. Walter is an experienced speaker, an artist that thinks out of the box, and it was his idea to do a talk for our students….

The event will take place on Friday September 17 at 3:30 PM at the Auditorium of the Walters Art Museum.

Attendance to the lecture and exhibit is mandatory for all Illustration majors. This is a free event at walking distance from campus.

Objective/Description:

The objective of the Senior Seminar component of Senior Thesis and Seminar is to prepare the student to enter the professional workforce equipped with the basic tools and knowledge necessary to compete regardless of the specific area or discipline chosen.

 Recommended Reading:

Inside The Business of Illustration, Steven Heller, Marshall Arisman, New York: Allworth Press, 2004

 Communication Arts, Coyne & Blanchard, Inc., Menlo Park, CA.

The objective of Senior Seminar is to prepare the student to enter the professional workforce equipped with the basic tools and knowledge necessary to compete regardless of the specific area or discipline chosen.  The areas of concentration and study may, but are not limited to the following:

• The creation of a professional quality portfolio, website and support materials that reflects an intended artistic direction.
• A writing component will reflect an in-depth study of a chosen area within the broad discipline of illustration.
• A basic functional understanding of business forms and contracts.
• Exploration and initial execution of marketing and promotion options.
• An understanding of the professional issues of copyright law, usage, stock art, and current legislation and how it affects artists.
• Development of skills in pricing and ethics.
• Understanding and development of the collaborative nature of working with art directors, designers and professional associates. Our class will host several guests from various disciplines over the course of the semester.
• Developing and understanding the entrepreneurial spirit.
• Begin to develop a network of professional support and camaraderie through the establishment of relationships with experienced working artists.
• Sharpen verbal skills necessary to communicate visual ideas, problem solving, and presentation of your portfolio.
